Sad

i'm sad
but not as sad as sadness of a wilted flower
or that of yellowed books on shelves collecting dust
the sadness of a schoolyard teasing
or realization of unanswered lust

the sadness of a fire blazing,
eating away the pictures you once framed
or ant who's day was wasted
by curiosity of children's hands

i'm sad, with sadness running freely
unconfined, unapologetic
but not as sad as graceful aging of a body
with time, so unsympathetic

along with seasons changing, my sadness will be fed
the sadness of the never ending, and sadness of the dead
i'm sad, but not as sad as sadness
not quite sad as you
for it is you, my sadness
sad's all you ever knew

Another sleepless night…the ashtray full of half-smoked cigarettes, a glass of wine, not reflecting anything, just being there… i look in the mirror, my gaze sinking deeper and deeper into my eyes…what am I looking for? a hook to hang my soul on, to wipe out the raindrops of my tears, to straighten the wrinkles from my smiles, to bury my face in its caressing velvet indifference? a little island – to lay my soul on the warm sand and let it take in the burning truth of the sun? what am I hoping to find? vague voices from the past, the unbearably fragile smell of the mountain flowers my father used to bring me in the morning? soft and loving hands of my little daughters, grasping the air in a desperate search for love? i have no answers, sinking deeper and deeper into my liberating unawareness…
